John Paul McQueen

John Paul McQueen is a fictional character from the British Channel 4 soap opera ''Hollyoaks'', played by James Sutton. The character debuted on-screen during the episode airing on 6 September 2006; his storylines have significantly revolved around his sexuality, evolving from the initial denial of his homosexuality, to the pursuit and relations with best friend Craig Dean, the storyline gained a fanbase and garnered them "supercouple status".
The storylines received acclaim from LGBT rights charity Stonewall. John Paul later has a relationship with a priest, Kieron Hobbs. In 2008, Sutton quit the serial and his character received a "sunset ending" with Craig, which was promised for fans by executive producer Bryan Kirkwood. In October 2012, it was announced Sutton had reprised his role and John Paul returned on 18 December 2012, following his departure from his role as Ryan Lamb in ''Emmerdale''. Since his return, the character has been involved in: a controversial male rape storyline involving his pupil Finn O'Connor (Keith Rice); a failed marriage to Ste Hay (Kieron Richardson); being hospitalised due to a drink that was spiked with drugs; involved at a train crash with his family, which was result the death of his older sister Carmel McQueen (Gemma Merna); a drunken kiss with Harry Thompson (Parry Glasspool) which months later, jeopardised his career; a fling with cousin-in-law, Lockie Campbell (Nick Rhys).
==Storylines==
John Paul meets Craig Dean (Guy Burnet) after saving him from a beating by bully Sonny Valentine (Devon Anderson). John Paul and Craig become close friends. John Paul confesses to Craig that he is in love with him at John Paul's girlfriend's house. John Paul is horrified at what he has confessed, and tells Craig that he is sorry and will leave him alone. Craig, however, refutes this idea. John Paul and Craig share a drunken kiss at a school dance-off competition which is seen by Hannah Ashworth (Emma Rigby) who at the time was John Paul's girlfriend, and tells everyone at the dance. John Paul comes out to his family, receiving support from all of his sisters, except Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe) and Michaela (Hollie-Jay Bowes), and reluctant support from his mother Myra (Nicole Barber-Lane). John Paul comes out to his classmates. However, following this event, during a 5-a-side football practice with Sonny and Craig, John Paul is teased and bullied by Craig, who eventually attacks John Paul physically. John Paul punches Craig and, after a violent threat to anyone else who wishes to bully him, runs off. Craig attempts to say sorry to him but John Paul makes it clear that he is no longer his friend and does not accept his apology, but eventually forgives him after he was discover that he was sturggle during his life, since the divorce of his father Johnno Dean (Colin Wells) and mother Frankie Osborne (Helen Pearson) in three years ago.
John Paul and Craig later make up and begin an affair. It goes on for months with Craig always saying that he is going to end it. John Paul sends a text to Sarah (Craig's girlfriend) saying to come up the stairs. She then walked in on Craig and John Paul kissing. Craig announces to his family that he is in love with John Paul. Craig's announcement leads to a show-down style confrontation between the McQueen family and the Dean family, from which John Paul and Craig run away and discuss their feelings for each other. Craig tells John Paul that he loves him, but denies being gay, saying that it is not about being gay, it is about who you fall in love with, before asking John Paul to come with him to Dublin, an offer which John Paul accepts. As they prepare to leave together, Craig admits to his brother, Jake (Kevin Sacre), that he is not gay, and he only cares for John Paul. John Paul overhears this and expresses more concern at Craig's reluctance to come out; this is further exacerbated by Craig not being able to bring himself to kiss or hold John Paul at the airport as they wait for the plane to Dublin. Although John Paul loves Craig, he realises that he needs more than to be with a man who cannot even display affection towards him in public. Heartbroken, John Paul returns home, leaving Craig to go to Dublin alone.
John Paul has a brush with death during his flat warming party. A carbon monoxide leak from the faulty boiler renders John Paul and the other revellers unconscious. Fortunately, he is saved by Danny Valentine (David Judge), Mercedes and Justin Burton (Chris Fountain). John Paul is later forced to move back into his family home. In early 2008, Myra McQueen offers her home to the Hollyoaks new young Catholic Priest, Father Kieron Hobbs. John Paul and Kieron later begin a relationship in secret. They are nearly caught by Myra when petting in the McQueen residence. Despite this, Kieron later says that he is the happiest man he has ever been with John Paul. John Paul and Kieron become an official romantic couple after making their relationship public. John Paul proposes to Kieron who joyfully accepts. However, a few weeks later, John Paul realises he's too young to get married and calls off the engagement, shortly before finding out that Craig has returned to the village. When Craig returns, Kieron witnesses him and John Paul in an intimate embrace outside The Dog in The Pond. Although John Paul insists nothing is going on, Kieron gives John Paul an ultimatum, insisting they get married the following week. When John Paul cannot make that promise, Kieron sadly accepts their relationship is over. Craig returns and on reuniting, all John Paul's romantic feelings for him resurface. Kieron is left angry after confronting John Paul. After a confrontation, John Paul admits to Craig he still loves him, and Craig tells him he could never move on with girls in Dublin because John Paul was always on his mind and he always loved him. They make love after a year apart shortly after. They both leave together to live in Dublin.

Years later John Paul unsuccessfully attempts to prevent Craig from leaving him at the coach station in Dublin. He ends up meeting Brendan Brady (Emmett J. Scanlan) and sleeps with him. He returns home for Christmas only to find an abandoned baby at his family's doorstep. John Paul tells Nancy that he is the father. He reveals that he and Craig decided to have a child to save their relationship. However, it is unknown who is the paternal father. He initially rejects the baby, but decides to be a single parent and names him Matthew. He secures a teaching job at the local sixth form. His colleague Jen Gilmore (Amy Downham) gets fired when it emerges she was previously in a relationship with student Tilly Evans (Lucy Dixon). However, when Patrick discovers John Paul's awareness of Jen's actions, he believes he will lose his job, so he and Doug cover Patrick's car with post-its as a prank. It seems John Paul will embark on a relationship with Doug Carter (PJ Brennan), after a tumultuous start, the two sleep together. Later, it turns out that Patrick was not intending to fire John Paul, but suspends him from work because of his prank. John Paul later starts dating Doug but ends because Doug is still in love with Ste.
John Paul meets supply teacher Danny Lomax (Stephen Billington). He kisses John Paul but does not see him for two weeks. John Paul later tells Danny that he will not be treated badly, but they soon begin dating. Matthew's mother Chloe (Susan Loughnane) arrives and claims Craig is Matthew's father. She demands money or she will fight for custody, but a DNA test proves John Paul as the father. John Paul and Danny find the body of D.S. Trent while on a date. John Paul is upset to learn that Danny is married to Sam Lomax (Lizzie Roper), lies about Danny being present at the discovery and briefly implicates himself in the murder investigation. Finn O'Connor (Keith Rice) and Robbie Roscoe (Charlie Wernham) begin tormenting John Paul. The bullying itensifies with a series of pranks and homophobic abuse directed at John Paul. He tries to reason with Finn and help him with his family problems, but it only makes the situation worse. John Paul begins a relationship with Ste, follow by the death of his husband Doug, and the two of them share their first kiss.
After John Paul humiliates Finn he is placed in charge of a detention in which Finn is present. While alone with Finn, he attacks John Paul with an ornament and rapes him. John Paul goes to the police to report the attack but changes his mind before making a statement. John Paul confines himself to his bedroom and Sam offers him support. He also discover that his cousin Theresa was arrest for murder of Calvin Valentine back in 2010. When he loses his temper with Peri Lomax (Ruby O'Donnell) for but Sam forgives him. John Paul returns to his job and is placed on a school trip with Finn and Robbie. Finn is involved in a quad bike accident and John Paul contemplates letting him die before administering CPR. Robbie wants to know why he was reluctant to save Finn and starts taunting him in class. John Paul loses his temper and punches Robbie. John Paul is suspended and arrested but given bail. He begins drinking and takes cocaine with Ste. But Robbie learns that Finn has raped John Paul and he apologises for his role in bullying. On the day of John Paul's assault hearing Robbie tries to confess, but Finn intercepts the confession writing an accusation that John Paul sexually harassed Robbie and this is read to the court, which serves him a six month jail sentence. Sam learns of John Paul and Danny's affair and refuses to see him again. He also orders Ste to never visit him in prison. In prison, John Paul meets Trevor who protects John Paul from getting beaten up. In return, John Paul has to find out, whether Ste was the one who killed Fraser.
Once John Paul gets released from prison, he attempts to mend things with Ste. After a few failed attempts, they end um talking in the folly, just after Ste got fired from the restaurant for doing drugs in the kitchen. While discussing Ste's drug problem, Ste confesses that he fears, he's killed Fraser, but can't remember for sure. John Paul tries to help him out by getting his hands on some video footage from the night in question. He sees Ste throwing away a gun. After hiding the gun and the footage, he lies to Ste and tells him that he didn't murder Fraser. John Paul also shows part of the footage to Trevor Royle to get him off Ste. Unfortunately, Ste can't keep his promise and John Paul gives up on him.
Weeks later, the McQueens find themselves in money problems and lose their house. John Paul has to move himself and his family into the council house where Ste lives, neither of them being too happy to see the other. Nana McQueen tries to play matchmaker, but Ste and John Paul fall out again over Ste doing drugs. Finally, John Paul confesses to Ste that he hid the gun and Ste could have killed Fraser. They are being overheard by Danny Lomax who digs up the gun, out of jealousy. Later on, Sonny Valentine (now a police officer) comes to arrest John Paul for covering for someone, since his fingerprints were all over the gun. Ste finally confesses to Sonny and gets arrested. Out of fear, to go back to prison, John Paul admits what he did with the gun to the police and feels very guilty for being responsible for Ste's imprisonment. After Sam Lomax finds evidence that Ste couldn't have killed Fraser, he returns to John Paul and the two finally make up and confess their feelings for each other. After his friend Nancy is nearly raped, John Paul feels guilty because he feels he could have stopped it. Robbie is falsely accused of raping Nancy, but after hugging him and recognizing the smell of his aftershave, she realizes it was Finn. Finn's mother Diane believes she is lying but John Paul eventually speaks out and tells everyone that Finn raped him too. Nancy ends her friendship with John Paul in the knowledge that he could have prevented her attack by reporting Finn.
John Paul proposes to Ste and they become engaged, but John Paul is unaware that Ste had a one-night stand with Sinead O'Connor (Stephanie Davis) while the two were drunk. Finn pleads Not Guilty in court to the charges of rape and attempted rape. Diane confronts John Paul in the street, and he learns that Finn is now lying that John Paul had used drugs and alcohol to coerce him into sex. John Paul tries to retract his statement, but Sonny says that it's too late to stop the trial going ahead; withdrawing the statement will deny John Paul the chance to answer his case against Finn. John Paul ends his engagement after finding out that George Smith (Steven Roberts) has kissed Ste; but the couple reconcile when George confirms that he initiated the kiss and Ste turned him down. They break up again temporarily when John Paul discovers Ste had stolen from him and robbed The Hutch (injuring Diane in the process) to buy drugs because of the stress of the trial. However, after a heartfelt conversation they again reunite. Finn is found guilty of the charges of rape and attempted rape, and returned to prison to await sentencing. He permits John Paul to visit. John Paul states that he is now free to move on with his life and Finn will now never control him again.
John Paul is devastated when he discovers Ste's drug problems are getting worse, and attempts to make them better by arranging a visit from Amy Barnes (Ashley Slanina-Davies). However, Ste shows up drunk to the visit and Amy leaves Hollyoaks with Ste's children. Newcomer Lockie Campbell (Nick Rhys) arrives and begins flirting with Ste, offering him drugs in exchange for sex, but reveals he was joking. In revenge, Ste tampers with Lockie's drugs with cleaning fluids. Lockie then gives them to John Paul on a night out, attempting to seduce him, but John Paul has a severe reaction to the tampered drugs and collapses, ending up in hospital. He slowly recovers to the village, and continues flirting with Lockie, feeling pushed out by Ste's drug problems. Ste then attends rehab for his drug problems after holding Lockie at knife point in the street whilst on drugs. John Paul is shocked to discover that Lockie is bisexual, and marrying his cousin Porsche McQueen (Twinnie Lee More). During the wedding ceremony, John Paul interrupts the proceedings and announces to everybody that Lockie has tried to seduce him, however Porsche doesn't care and goes ahead with the marriage anyway. At the wedding reception, which takes place on a party train, the family discover Carmel was attempting to steal Theresa's daughter Kathleen Angel and flee with Sonny, and John Paul, along with the other's, disowns her. The train then derails after colliding with Sienna Blake (Anna Passey)'s car on the tracks, and Carmel dies after saving Theresa from Sonny in the wreckage. John Paul is devastated to not have made amends with his sister before her death, and reminisces about her in hospital with Mercedes. However, John Paul is forced to pay Mercedes to leave the village for a few days after she tries to force Myra to kick Theresa out, claiming she ruined Carmel's life. The day of Carmel Mcqueen's funeral Mercedes arrives drunk and Myra is upset. They have words resulting in Mercedes leaving. That day Mercedes Mcqueen disappears. John Paul attends his sisters memorial and on the same day his boyfriend Ste is released from rehab, after hearing about he Mcqueen girls he demands his sister Leela Lomax drive him to the memorial so that he can be there for John Paul. When Ste arrives at the memorial he sees John Paul being comforted by Lockie Campbell. Ste lashes out and punches Lockie before running away. John Paul goes to find him and they reconcile, both stating they love each other and wish they could have been there for each other. That day, after having an encounter with his abusive step father Ste makes the decision to propose to John Paul with the help of his kids. John Paul says yes, stating he always wanted a Christmas wedding. The next day John paul is trying to tell his mother about the recent engagement but she is focused on finding evidence for Mercedes disappearance from Freddie Roscoe. After the Mcqueens can not find any evidence John Paul decides to tell his mother in attempt to give her good news. Myra rejects this, telling John Paul she will not let John Paul end up with another bad life partner like his sisters. The next day in attempt to reconcile with Myra over differences he hosts a lunch, Myra accepts the wedding plans.
During his 90's themed stag party on Christmas Eve, where John Paul is dressed as Ginger Spice, a drunk Nancy mocks Ste, claiming he will be getting drunk at his party despite promising John Paul he wouldn't. Attempting to prove them wrong, John Paul brings them to the Loft only to find that Ste is indeed drinking. Angered he storms out with Lockie close behind. After a confrontation John Paul throws an object at a passing police officer. While hiding with Lockie in the back of a truck, they become locked in and end up being driven to Scotland. With the wedding in hours, and still dressed as a Spice Girl, John Paul is desperate to get back to Ste. Luckily Lockie is able to convince a passing rugby team to give them a lift to the church. After reuniting with his family, John Paul and the McQueen's fondly remember Tina, Carmel and Mercedes. Given away by his entire family, John Paul and Ste are finally married on Christmas Day. Later at the reception, John Paul's happiness is cut short by Sinead O'Connor who informs everyone that Ste is actually the father of her unborn child, a result of their drunken one night stand. After Sinead is later involved in a hit and run, John Paul goes to the hospital to talk with Ste. Despite Ste's fear their marriage is over before it can begin, John Paul reveals he still loves Ste, despite everything, and they agree to remain together, while there more bad news to John Paul, as Ste has been diagnosed with HIV, causing him to stay away from him for a while.
In February, he receives a phone call from Finn to visit him in prison, which he does. Finn shows a lot of remorse for what he did and begs John Paul to forgive him, which he doesn't. When John Paul goes through Sinead's purse to get a sonogram photo, he finds several visitor passes, to which John Paul tells Ste that he has to choose between him and Sinead. Right after this, John Paul and Sinead had visit Finn in prison, as Finn asked him for forgiveness, which he doesn't. John Paul begins to interview with Patrick, to re-employed him as English teacher in Hollyoaks High School, but it was ruining by Sinead as she told everybody about Lockie giving him drugs, causing him to the hospital, and Diane told her that Ste have HIV, which devastated her. Right after this, John Paul met Harry Thompson, and together they have a drunken kiss, until he was completely shocked that he was Tony's son. Then John Paul gets a job at Hollyoaks High only to realise he is going to be teaching Harry Thompson. John Paul then begs Harry not to tell Ste and Harry reluctantly agrees. John Paul becomes guilty and keeps his distance from Harry. Sinead finds out that John Paul and Harry had kissed she forced him to tell him the truth but he doesn't. Sinead's cousin, Scott, comes and reveals the truth because he wants Sinead and Ste to be together. Ste breaks up with John Paul to have a relationship with Sinead, forcing John Paul to move back into his old house.
When Porsche and Lockie start to have arguments, Lockie draws close to John Paul. In the bathroom, they share a kiss, but vow not to tell anyone. Although, after Porsche and Lockie argue again, Lockie has sex with John Paul. After a while, they begin an affair behind Porsche's back, although Porsche seems suspicious about how Lockie and John Paul are close. John Paul and Lockie have sex in the headmaster's office in the high school, but are nearly caught out by Porsche and Cleo, to which John Paul lies and says that they are planning Cleo's reward party. At the party, John Paul says to Lockie that he needs to tell Porsche, but Porsche overhears, and thinks he is having an affair with another woman, but Lockie lies again, and says he has a gambling problem. Lockie and Porsche get back together, which then infuriates John Paul, but they later have sex again. Then, John Paul spies on Lockie and sees him kissing Mercedes.
